Through the design of public spaces, products and services, design has the potential to exert an influence on all aspects of our life – and thus on our behaviour, too.

As possibilities of surveying and recording behaviour patterns and movements increase, the balance between privacy and surveillance is constantly shifting further through the wish for greater security. Given this background, what possibilities does design have to change existing political, economic and cultural structures and processes?


We will ask how far design already plays a central role in politics, see how power is presented on the public stage, and investigate which counter-movements are growing from existing structures. The various perspectives of players such as designers, users and clients, as well as regulatory authorities, with their varying viewpoints, will make it possible to gain a comprehensive as well as many-layered study and assessment of power in design.

In our next edition we shall also ask how inside pockets in various items of clothing have influenced our everyday life in the course of time, feature the work of Forensic Architecture, a research agency located at the Goldsmiths, University of London, which undertakes architectural and media research for international litigants and human-rights organisations, and show a selection of moving poster designs.
