The perpetual series of crises does not stop: whether the financial crisis, migration crisis, climate crisis or the crisis of democracy: the impression of recurring states of exception prompted us at the beginning of the year to define crisis as the topic for form 288.
With the corona pandemic, the crisis is now literally returning to its origin, since the term actually referred to the decisive turning point in an illness. In the political context, the perceived mass of crises currently leads to the desire for simple answers. But the crisis need not be an exception, it may even be the rule. For Walter Benjamin, the real crisis is the inconspicuous state of normality. The crisis opens up new opportunities and creates space for unconventional action. Design can prove its true competence here, because wherever spaces open up to be designed, there is infinite potential.
In the upcoming issue, we will look at the diverse relationships between design and crisis. form 288 will be released on 19 June, 2020.
