Alternatives for Living. Blueprints for Haus Lange Haus Esters
Haus Esters, Haus Lange, Krefeld
– 26 January 2020
The “Alternatives for Living” exhibition project makes the Lange and Esters houses designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe the object of reflection on future housing and living. According to Katia Baudin, director of the Kunstmuseen Krefeld and one of the curators of the project, “contemporary witnesses of Neues Bauen [new building]” Mies van der Rohe’s villas are particularly suitable as a framework for the works of 16 participating artists, architects and designers focusing on the keyword utopia. In a critical examination of the challenges of the digital, global society, such as scarcity of resources and housing shortages, these works question human production in times of material abundance, the demarcation between public and private space, and the legacy of “new building” in social housing. In three acts – Utopia, Mobility, Dystopia – the houses are intended to provide a stimulus for interdisciplinary dialogue.
