Barcelona Design Week 2018
5 – 14 June 2018
“Why do you have to put an expiry date on everything you buy?” This is the challenging question that highlights the direction taken by the central theme of Barcelona Design Week 2018, which is “The Current State and Consequences of the Consumer Society.” Design has a role to play in re-examining various products and in thinking about behaviour and concepts that are harmful to the environment.
This year’s Barcelona Design Week is using its slogan “Revalue” to question general consumer behaviour, which is often based on mass and expansion. However, finding a sustainable, healthy way of being on planet Earth and using its resources, and ultimately taking care of our own lives requires a paradigm shift. Design can play an important role in this approach. This point of view, among other things, is the focus of the “Barcelona Design Summit”, which brings together an extremely wide range of presentations. Johan Karlsson, co-founder and CEO of the organisation Better Shelter, amongst others, will talk about their approach in tackling the refugee problem in design theory and in practice.
In addition to the official programme with more than 100 offerings organised by the Barcelona Design Center and Fostering Arts and Design (FAD), there are numerous other events taking place in the Catalan capital covering all design disciplines. International partner organisations for 2018, including those from Italy, Brazil and China, are also participating in the discourse on site. Overall, the relevance of Barcelona as a location for design as well as the associated potential for society and the economy will have a reach far beyond the Design Week.
