All the World’s a Stage?
Deutsches Architekturmuseum, Frankfurt/Main
24 March – 13 May 2018
The future of Frankfurt’s Städtische Bühnen is still being hotly debated. And so the Deutsches Architekturmuseum and the city’s cultural department have joined forces to grapple with the issue of theatre houses at the current exhibition.
To renovate and restore or demolish and build again? That is the question. Apart from the fact that something has to happen with the now dilapidated 1960s building that is home to both opera and drama, and that this will be both a lengthy and costly exercise, nothing else is currently really clear. Opinions on possible building options among politicians and the citizens of Frankfurt are divided.
The exhibition “All the World’s a Stage?” takes on the issues and presents theatre houses from all over Europe. It explores modern forms of staging, new technical possibilities, a range of audience opinions and the goal of creating a space for cultural encounters. Different projects, including both renovation and new buildings, serve as reference points and sources of inspiration for Frankfurt’s Städtische Bühnen.
