Left and Returned.Fleeing Abroad and Coming Back Again
25 September – 4 October 2015
As part of Vienna Design Week, the exhibition “Left and Returned” takes place from 25 September to 4 October in the Brotfabrik Vienna and tackles the subject of designers leaving to go abroad and returning again. The exhibition showcases the work of ten designers who have worked abroad for a while and how their experiences have influenced their work on their return.
Vienna Design Week is Austria’s largest design festival and last year enticed over 30,000 visitors to the city. This year sees the festival’s ninth edition, and once again its aim is to make creative and production processes more accessible and at the same time to promote experimental work in the area of design.
Against this background, the exhibition “Left and Returned” presents the work of ten Austrian designers, all graduates from different universities in Austria, who have left their homeland to spend a period abroad – in London, the Netherlands, Germany or Sweden – to seek their fortune.
Departing always creates a combination of enticement and rift: encountering new opportunities but leaving behind things one loves. The designers left their homeland primarily to seek new experiences abroad, to learn a new craft or to reflect on their beliefs. On their return, the ten designers give insights into their development and the impact their stay abroad had on them: the exhibition shows things that have been rejected, left behind and personal stories about leaving home and returning from abroad. The exhibition will open on 26 September 2015 at 5 pm. On Sunday 4 October, there is the opportunity to take part in a discussion and guided tour around the exhibition.
