ModMag London 2018
Conway Hall, London
1 November 2018
The theme of the sixth annual Modmag London conference this year is “Reinvention”; a topic many magazines are repeatedly confronted by, be it with regard to continuous development or more fundamental changes to their graphics, design or content.
As in previous years, the conference will be packed with numerous lectures given by international as well as national speakers from the print industry, alongside creative directors and editors of large and small, new and old, popular and independent magazines. Four guests whose magazines have all seen changes in recent times are particularly in line with the subject of reinvention. The creative director of National Geographic, Emmet Smith, will give a talk on the background to the creative reinvention of this prestigious science and nature magazine. Dan Sandison, founder and editor-in-chief of Mundial, a magazine for football and lifestyle first published on the occasion of the World Championship in 2014 with a rapidly increasing readership ever since, will give us insights into the development of a professional magazine, which grew out of a love for sport into a serious enterprise. Tom Meredith, creative director of Elle UK, will talk about how the magazine’s graphic redesign earned him the title of Art Director of the Year at the Professional Publishers Association Awards 2018 and Carol Monpart, creative director of The Plant, will take us through the larger format and revised typography of the twelfth edition that influenced the entire design of the magazine. Other speakers include Elisabeth Krohn of Sabat, Deirdre Dyer of No Man’s Land, Max Siedentopf from Ordinary magazine as well as Jeff Taylor from Courier. The conference is organised by London-based Mag Culture, a design studio, shop, and blog in one, that specialises in editorial design.
