Ray Fotografieprojekte 2018
– 9 September 2018
“Images have become a universal means of communication and therefore a fundamental part of our time,” describes Helmut Müller, Director of the Kulturfonds Frankfurt Rhine-Main and co-initiator of the Ray triennial, the starting point for the festival of contemporary photography and related media.
Taking place every three years at more than ten venues in Frankfurt/Main and the Rhine-Main region, Ray launches a multifaceted engagement with the medium of photography. In 2018, the topic “Extreme” guides through a diverse programme and collaborative projects.
According to a festival press release “The extreme is booming. Especially in this age of digitally circulating information and images that demand an economy of attention, the extreme triggers the desire to be captured in an image.” In five exhibitions, photographs are assigned the finer subtopics of “Extreme Nomads”, “Extreme Transformation”, “Extreme Self”, “Extreme Body”, “Extreme Territories” and “Extreme Environment”. Local institutions, collections, colleges, and organisations have collaborated in the organisation of the events. In total, 15 partners from six cities join forces to highlight the social significance of photography. In addition to the official programme, further exhibitions and events in the Rhine-Main area will take place under the title “Ray Plus” until September. In order to appeal to a younger audience, local schools are being integrated into various projects under the banner of “Ray Junior”.
The triennial Ray Fotografieprojekte Frankfurt/Rhine-Main was founded in 2010 on the initiative of the Kulturfonds Frankfurt Rhine-Main to bring together and highlight the competence and diversity of artistic photography in the Rhine-Main region.
