Setting the Stage: Objects of Chicago Theatre
Design Museum of Chicago
– 5 January 2020
Art and design may be different disciplines, but without design many forms of art are unthinkable. In the exhibition “Setting the Stage”, the Design Museum Chicago shows the significance of design for the theatre. “Whether it’s a poster, a costume, lighting or sound design, the magic of the theatre is created through the design process”, says Deb Clapp, executive director of the League of Chicago Theatres. The museum has brought together loans from over forty theatres in the city. Props, costumes, sketches – 56 exhibits illustrate where design is used in theatre. Each month, a stage in the centre of this interdisciplinary show acts as a performance venue for a different theatre group. The collaboration between the Design Museum and the local theatres is organised as part of the celebrations for the Year of Chicago Theatre 2019.
