Staatspreis Design 2017
Weissraum Designforum Tirol, Innsbruck
25 September – 18 October 2018
The Austrian State Design Prize is awarded every two years for outstanding projects in the fields of product design and spatial design. The Weissraum Designforum Tirol is holding an exhibition of some of the nominated and prizewinning products and projects.
The State Design Prize 2017 was awarded in three categories: product design for consumer goods, product design for capital goods and spatial design. A special prize was also awarded for outstanding design concepts. The prize recognises creative work that has an impact on social and economic processes and focuses on innovation, sustainability, and inclusiveness. For instance, the exhibition includes a mobile crushing and sieving system developed by Dsb Maschinenbau GmbH and a mixer tap with an integrated water consumption display, the brainchild of industrial designer Rebecca Daum. Weissraum put together the exhibition in conjunction with the Tyrolean Folk Art Museum, which is responsible for the historical part of the display, which looks at the origins of modern design products and reveals historical objects that are similar to today’s new innovations in terms of concept, production, and design. The juxtaposition of old and new is particularly thrilling here as it demonstrates that the visual aesthetics of products played a role in the past too. As such, a modern drinking cup collection and a historical pewter guild cup are displayed side by side, together with early incarnations of convertible furniture. A talk on “Design of Change – Designing Transformation” and a product design-themed excursion to Andelsbuch in the Bregenz Forest will also take place alongside the exhibition.
