Tell Me Something

Advice from Documentary Filmmakers

Film First, New York

128 pages

ISBN: 978-0-9895321-2-9

All you need to make a film, says Martin Scorsese, is not to be scared – of anyone or anything. Jessica Edwards, herself a filmmaker, asked sixty documentary filmmakers for advice. In “Tell Me Something”, each of these filmmakers in turn is presented alongside a photo, a statement and a small selection of their work.

The names include pioneers and newcomers, experimentalists and adrenalin junkies, activists and researchers. Some have travelled the world to find their stories; others make films about themselves and their families. We learn that Stanley Nelson, for example, constantly has to remind himself to enjoy travelling. Jessica Yu, by contrast, explains how draining a bottle of wine makes cutting raw footage a much less arduous task. For Albert Maysles it is all about empathy, while Errol Morris advises against following advice of any kind. The net result of these portraits and words and wisdom is a manual that is likely to prove useful to all sorts of people – and not just budding documentary filmmakers.
