Hilton Portland Downtown
1 – 5 August 2018
Typecon is an annual conference organised by the Society of Typographic Aficionados, and dedicated to promoting and exploring typography and related art forms.
The conference offers several workshops, guided tours, and lectures introducing both theoretical approaches and practical work, inviting visitors to become creative themselves. Among other things, the workshops will help attendees to learn and deepen their understanding of hand lettering, provide insights into colour theory and terminology, and Korean Hangul design. Portland’s Urban Lettering Walk, featuring designer and design historian Paul Shaw, explores the region’s typographic features, such as historic neon signs and hand-painted slogans on house walls known as Ghost Signs. The speakers are teachers from the fields of design and art, and designers or experts in the practical application of typography. The lectures will cover topics such as the connection between typography, language, culture, and economics. Various international writing systems and the versatile use of typography in the areas of film, art, and urban design are presented.
For all the events of the conference, such as the Typecon’s 20th anniversary celebration organised by SOTA on 4 August 2018, interested parties can register on the Typecon website.
