In his lecture “Understanding Surfaces. On Jewellery and Identity.“ at the exhibition of jewellery in the Pinakothek der Moderne, the philosopher and essayist, Pravu Mazumdar, will be examining the meaning, function and understanding of surfaces.

Born in 1952 in India, the philosopher will be referring to the surface of humans, its cultural elements - clothing, make-up, jewellery, gait, skin, bearing and voice, all of which he sees as being more than a type of packaging. In these elements, he sees the function being fulfilled that defines a person’s individuality and organises it within boundaries. For him, within contemporary jewellery, there exists the possibility of breaking through the shell of identity so that a contrast to the pressure of identity of modern life is possible. The lecture will be given in English. Entry is free.
