Atelier Brückner has designed a permanent exhibition for the CERN “Globe of Science and Innovation“ visitor center, which since July 1 has provided visitors with an opportunity to do a spot of research and marvel at the exhibits. The exhibition “Universe of Particles” is now on display beneath the 27-meter high dome of a wooden pavilion originally conceived for the Swiss Expo 2002. In a 450-square meter exhibition area in the basement visitors can gain an insight into the scientific work conducted at the world’s largest center for research into particle physics using the LHC particle accelerator.
Through interactive exhibition elements and a multimedia main show room projection visitors will be able to “submerge in cosmic worlds“. For this they will use, among other things, cutting-edge, specially developed touch interfaces, which function by means of complex back projection and IR camera tracking systems.
Formally Atelier Brückner takes up the existing dome architecture: Spheres and circles determine the entire exhibition design. The focal point of the show is a circular disc, on to which current data from the LHC particle accelerator are projected. Additional elements include object spheres and interactive touch balls, in which theme complexes appear as bright spheres and can be activated by visitors. At an interactive media desk a touch screen enables one to navigate round the CERN grounds; the interactive globe, which can be rotated by hand, shows the research center’s worldwide links. The uniform spatial experience is rounded out by cocoon-like ball chairs, which provide not only an opportunity to relax, but also acoustic information. In addition to the round bodies the use of Corian surfaces in white determines the design concept.
