Graduates and teachers at the Detmold College of Architecture and Interior Design have redesigned the permanent exhibition of the furniture collection owned by the Lippisches Landesmuseum in Detmold. The extensive furniture collection was only established in 1989 by the Professor of interior design at the Detmold School Felix Nitsch. Now, from the wealth of trailblazing designs by Thonet, Josef Hoffmann, Marcel Breuer, Mart Stam, Charles and Ray Eames, plus innovative concepts by Philippe Starck, Konstantin Grcic and others, the teachers and graduates at the School have compiled a collection on the history of sitting.
The exhibition concept is based on Jasmin Schellmann’s Master’s design, revised by the Detmold-based architecture studio “zwischen_raum”. It shows the furniture classified into thematic groups such as “Leisure time”, “Relaxation”, “Sitting and standing” and “Idea and design”. The objects are presented on two stories of the Museum’s tithe barn. The first level clearly explains how chairs are made – from the design through the material and technology to production and sale. The second level, under the heading “Work and relaxation”, focuses on the use of the furniture. Baunacher Spurbuchverlag has published a book on the subject of sitting to accompany the exhibition.
The permanent exhibition is to be redesigned at regular intervals in the future too. Alongside new objects from the collection, designs by students at the Detmold School are also to be displayed.
