From today until 10 August, Talking Type – Schriftmaschinen shows typography ideas of international design students. The aim of the exhibition is to present type not as a tool but as a medium in its own right, which “can illustrate its own history and own context through its design,” according to the initiators.
The non-profit making exhibition project is being curated by Stefanie Miller, Peter Stahmer, Marko Grewe and Simon Roth, students from the Communications Design Faculty and founders of Avoid Red Arrows, the student collective for typeface design at the Karlsruhe Design School. To date, Avoid Red Arrows was characterized by free workshops at the HfG, above all, the student group published the typography projects and designs of the communications designers that are created at the School. The collective recently invited students from all over Europe to submit typography projects; ten designers were selected and their works are now being shown in the exhibition.
There is no exhibition catalog for Talking Type: At the entrance visitors can purchase a disposable camera to take their own photos of the exhibits on display and later put together their own catalog with 27 original prints. Anyone who cannot manage to get to Karlsruhe can have the exhibition team take photos and have the camera plus photos sent to them.
