Special Issue: Where to Study Design
The first Advanced Design Project I ran at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, which was sponsored by Nokia, involved the Graphics and Product Design Departments at the college working together, and they needed a mediator. This particular person, a former head designer at Texas Instruments, was intended to arbitrate in possible communications and responsibility conflicts between the graphic design and product design students taking part as an interdisciplinary pro-ject of this nature was an absolute novelty at ACCD. And boy, did we need him. Without him Nokia would cer-tainly never have seen any clever ideas for future com-mu-nication devices on time. That was in the late 1990s. continue...

Design is not possible without Materials - reason enough to dedicate a special supplement to the subject again. In it you will get to know Myon, a robot with a large round eye. Thanks to special technology, its individual body parts can be removed without this impairing functionality – moreover, they independently acquire knowledge. And things are moving on the plastic cutlery market: in collaboration with BASF, ding3000 has developed a set consisting of knife, fork and spoon that not only boasts a knife that really cuts, but can also definitely be used as decorative additions to the set table. Five hall levels, more than 240,000 square meters, some 2,200 exhibitors: held every two years, the Light + Building fair in Frankfurt /Main is an April highlight (11th –16th). This year’s theme is “Energy Efficiency,” and on show are innovations and energy-saving system solutions relating to light, electrical engineering, and building services engineering. Our Special Issue deals with furniture and other objects designed by architects. Moreover, we reconsider the discipline of hotel design. Here, the boundaries between architecture and design really do become fluid. But what is it that actually makes a hotel a design hotel? Are a few items of classic furniture in the lobby enough or is more required? Finally, we feature a portrait of this year's Pritzker prizewinner Peter Zumthor. Designers and architects are constantly on the lookout for those new, extravagant and special materials with which to turn their ideas and designs into reality. But it would seem that for some now, it is no longer sufficient to simply use a manufacturer’s material and convert it into a new application. An increasing number of designers are developing their own new materials and production processes – thus turning classical knowledge of technology-driven innovation upside down. Horst Moser is one of the greatest collectors of and experts on magazines. As he tells it, he has more than 1,000 covers in his head. And his archive fills a 500 square meters hall. The 56-year-old is the owner of the Munich-based design office Independent Medien-Design and Art Director of customer magazines such as „Leica World" and of several German publishing houses. We wanted to find out from him how he selects pictures and what makes a good magazine cover. Moser's entire trend study is to be found at www.independent-medien-design.
