The uniformity of the design, the cleanness and smoothness of the fonts, the selection of the best forms, and the charm of the lettering: According to Bodoni, these are the four principles on which the beauty of a font rests. In 1818, the typographer sets out new guidelines for letterpress printing with his “Manuale Tipografico”. His two-volume work, printed then in just 250 copies, contains many roman types, cursives, ornaments, symbols, and alphabets of various languages. Taschen has now published the complete works together with an introduction in typography.
