21 August – 3 September 2017
From 21 August to 3 September 2017, the students of the Faculty of Design at the Mannheim University of Applied Sciences, the Hochschule Mannheim will host the Captcha Designfestival. The theme of this year’s festival is Nexus and this refers to the connections, which are visible in the application of design as well as to the connections made during the design process.
The festival will be launched with a symposium so as to create a design-theoretical basis on which the participants can build in the subsequent days. The philosophical background to the subject will be explored over the course of several lectures as well as the meaning of connections in the practice of design. Speakers include Thomas Friedrich, who teaches philosophy and design theory at the Faculty of Design in Mannheim, and Sucuk und Bratwurst, a young and successful design agency from Mainz. On the second day, workshops will be held for three and a half days offering students, established designers and workshop leaders a platform to jointly interpret the festival theme and to learn more about the use of different media by exchanging ideas with each other.
Jaime Ramirez makes video art using audio-visual and multimedia techniques and will lead a workshop including the use of analogue techniques in digital media. David Voss’ workshop is about conceptual design exploring the boundaries of the alphabet through new lyrics. Carolin Wanitzek offers a workshop in building room installations in paper on the theme of connections. In the fourth workshop, Aether-Design focuses on the processes that arise out of working together.
On August 25, the results of the workshops will be presented in the form of an exhibition at the Mannheim Kunstverein.
