Contemporary Art in the Digital Era
La Raffinerie, Brüssel
19 April – 26 May 2018
In cooperation with the artists’ collective Link Art Center, the interactive Media Art Laboratory (IMAL) has organised the exhibition “#Layers. Contemporary Art in the Digital Era” at La Raffinerie in Brussels, with fifteen contemporary artists from a range of generations based in Italy. Their works reflect the influence of the Internet and digitalisation on our society.
The Link Art Center is a platform that brings together artists from Italy and around the world who take a critical approach to themes concerning the information age. The focus of the exhibition in Brussels is on the question of how artists think about increasing quantities of data and general behaviour on the Internet. “#Layers” describes the digital complexity, and emphasises that access to art is easier facilitated for the general public through digitalisation and the “democratisation of the arts”, and notes how it presents new challenges for the profession. The individual works address the differences between code and interface in Generative Art and Glitch Art, the creative use of social media, the processing of stored data, the transitions between the private sphere and the public, materiality and immateriality as well as the visible and invisible.
The exhibition venue of La Raffinerie was the site of the first “International Festival of Electronic Music, Video and Computer Art” in 1981, and therefore has a historical connection to the exhibition. Entry to “#Layers” is free of charge.
