Minimalism / Maximalism

The Museum at FIT, New York
–16 Nov 2019

Minimalism and exuberance have always been controversial poles in design discourse. The exhibition Minimalism/Maximalism shows how it affected past and present.

While fashion of the past was characterised by minimalism, a trend towards maximalism has recently become more and more prevalent. In the exhibition “Minimalism/Maximalism”, the Museum of the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York explores the conflict between these extreme positions that runs through the entire history of fashion. The exhibition begins in the 18th century, marked by an ethos of “more is best” followed by an egalitarian, reserved style. Sober black business suits for men in contrast to ornamental styles and extreme silhouettes for women allow the line in the 19th century to follow along the gender divide. To the present day, the exhibition shows how inextricably linked minimalism and maximalism are.
