Mudun. Urban Cultures in Transit
Vitra Design Museum, Weil am Rhein
13 May – 20 August 2017
The exhibition “Mudun Urban Cultures in Transit” opens with a preview at 6 p.m. in the Vitra Design Museum gallery on Friday 12 May 2017. The exhibition explores cultural life and contemporary urban culture in the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region through contemporary photographs, models and texts.
Cities such as Ankara, Baghdad, Tehran or Tangiers are some of the cities of the MENA region, which have managed, with their creativity and culture, to step outside the shadow of political headlines. The thematic exhibition sections “Architecture”, “Places” and “Societies” focus on buildings, city districts and people, portraying the dynamics and atmospheres of individual locales as well as the relationship between people and their environments. The project is a collaboration between the Vitra Design Museum and the founders of Brownbook magazine, who made available their archive. The content and concept of the exhibition were discussed over a period of one year, with the aim of making it possible for visitors to get a real sense of the cities and their inhabitants. The curatorial team led by Rashid Bin Shabib of Brownbook and Janna Lipsky of the Vitra Design Museum will introduce the exhibition at the preview. A curatorial tour with Janna Lipsky will take place on 14 June 2017 at 10 a.m.
