Will Eisner: The Centennial Celebration 1917–2017
The Museum of Illustration, New York
– 3 June 2017
The Museum of Illustration presents a retrospective of William Erwin Eisner (1917–2005) on two floors until 3 June 2017. It is the largest exhibition of his life’s work ever to be held in the United States.
William Eisner is known as the champion of the graphic novel. His series “The Spirit” (1940–1952) and “A Contract with God” (1978) opened up a whole new world of storytelling. The exhibition “Will Eisner: The Centennial Celebration 1917–2017” pays homage to this great artist, who shaped and inspired a whole generation of young cartoonists. The exhibition displays over 150 items of his work, including the original artworks of the “Smash Comics” series (1939) and key sequences from the graphic novels “A Contract with God” and “Life on Another Planet” (1983), as well as some of his personal items such as his work tools and numerous awards. On Saturday 22 April 2017, visitors can also listen to a Gallery Talk with curators Denis Kitchen and John Lind.
